BT admits Bury St Edmonds fibre broadband delay

The technology is not currently available in the Churchgate area.

Residents and businesses in one area of Bury St Edmonds have been told they will have to wait for access to fibre optic broadband.

BT has rolled out the technology across the Suffolk town, reports the Bury Free Press, but issues with finding safe places to install street cabinets in the Churchgate area mean locals cannot access the service.

Despite the delay, a BT spokesman insisted the telecoms giant is committed to making faster internet available to all consumers and said it will continue to work on solutions in communities still hampered by slow speeds.

But worried chairman of the Churchgate Area Association, Andrew Hinchley, commented: "My fear is that if we miss out on this round of updates, we can't get the next round because it will be too much trouble."

According to BT, the "great majority" of properties in any upgraded exchange area will be able to connect to fibre optic broadband, although commercial and technical reasons mean a minority are likely to be left without access.
