The telecoms giant has announced more exchange areas will get access to the technology over the coming months.

BT Openreach has announced plans to bring fibre to the home (FTTH) to more properties across the UK.

The company revealed it will upgrade 156 exchanges over the coming months as part of its latest programme of fibre optic broadband rollouts.

This deployment is set to involve a mix of FTTH - offering download speeds of up to 100Mbps - and the slower fibre to the cabinet (FTTC), which has maximum capabilities of 40Mbps.

David Campbell, managing director of next-generation access at Openreach, said: "We're announcing a new set of locations serving a further 1.5 million premises, many of which will be able to enjoy the benefits of super-fast ... speeds from as early as this summer."

All of the work is set to be completed by the end of 2012.

BT is also bringing FTTH technology to homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly as part of its plan to transform the areas into two of the world's best-connected locations.
