BT backs fibre broadband rollouts to boost connection speeds

The company is planning to invest £2.5 billion in fibre broadband.

BT has said its fibre optic broadband rollout programme will help to drive up the UK's average connection speed.

A spokesman from the telecoms giant explained BT is currently delivering super-fast broadband to one million additional homes across the country every three months.

This will "inevitably" boost the average download and upload rates enjoyed by consumers and businesses as time goes by, he told the Gainsborough Standard.

Within the East Midlands, BT has announced plans to bring fibre broadband to more than 700,000 homes and businesses, around 66,000 of which will be located in Lincolnshire.

The spokesman went on to echo BT's commitment to investing £2.5 billion to deliver super-fast broadband to two-thirds of UK properties by 2015.

"We welcome the opportunity to work with public sector bodies and business organisations," he added.

His comments come just days after BT revealed 71,000 customers signed up to its Infinity fibre broadband service in the three months to June 30th 2011.
