BT's Infinity fibre broadband service is now available in Llantwit Major.

The first homes and businesses in the south Wales town of Llantwit Major have been connected to BT's fibre optic broadband service.

Engineers are conducting infrastructure upgrades in the area that will see around 4,000 properties hooked up to the technology over the coming weeks.

As a result of the project, approximately 200,000 Welsh premises are either set to receive super-fast broadband access in the near future or are already benefiting from the technology.

Another 95,000 properties across the country are due to be connected to fibre broadband by BT either before the end of the year or during 2012.

Jane Hutt, AM for the Vale of Glamorgan, said: "The arrival of super-fast broadband is a very important development for the town and it represents a significant investment in this area."

The news comes shortly after BT announced it will deliver its up to 110Mbps fibre-to-the-home service to the north Wales county of Flintshire before the end of the month.
