BT extends fibre broadband to Newbridge

More than 5,600 properties in Newbridge will be hooked up to fibre broadband in the coming weeks.

Newbridge has become the latest town in Wales to be included in BT's national fibre optic broadband rollout programme.

The company has pledged to invest £2.5 billion on deploying super-fast broadband to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2014.

As part of this project, BT is delivering fibre broadband access to over 5,600 homes and businesses in Newbridge, joining the more than 86,000 properties in Abergavenny, Blackwood Caerleon, Caerphilly, Caldicot, Chepstow, Hengoed and Newport that have already been connected.

BT's commercial investment comes in addition to the recently announced joint project between the telecoms giant and the Welsh government, which will see world-class broadband speeds extended to 96 per cent of Welsh properties by 2015.

Ann Beynon, BT's director for Wales, said the deployment of fibre broadband to the town will prove to be a "massive fillip" for local householders and employers.

"It will enrich people's lives and bring a much-needed boost to businesses in these economically challenging times," she added.
