BT launches fibre broadband in Dalton-in-Furness

Wednesday, July 31st 2013 by Paul France
The Cumbrian town of Dalton-in-Furness is receiving fibre broadband from BT.

Dalton-in-Furness has become the latest Cumbrian location to benefit from super-fast fibre broadband, after BT engineers arrived to install it as part of a £2.5 billion rollout of the technology.

More than 4,800 homes and businesses will be able to link up to the infrastructure over the coming weeks, joining their counterparts in nearby Penrith, Barrow-in-Furness, Carlisle, Kendal and Workington, where fibre is already in place.

By spring next year, more than 111,000 premises in Cumbria will have been connected to the network by the telecoms provider.

BT's Regional Director for the North-West Mike Blackburn said residents will start to experience a real boost to their economy as the benefits of super-fast broadband become clear.

"The arrival of fibre in Dalton can really help local firms in these economically challenging times, opening up new ways of working and speeding up vital operations," he added.

Currently, BT supplies more than 15 million UK homes and businesses with fibre broadband, although this is expected to increase to 19 million by spring 2014. This means in excess of two-thirds of British premises will have super-fast technology from BT within a year's time.
