Athletes and officials will be able to access the service for free during London 2012.

BT has announced it will offer around 19,000 athletes and officials staying at the Olympic Village during London 2012 the chance to use its fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) service for free.

The fibre broadband product, which features download speeds of up to 100Mbps, will be rolled out to around 2,800 apartments across 65 blocks in the east London district.

According to the telecoms giant, more than three-quarters of the communications infrastructure required for the Games has already been delivered.

As well as deploying FTTP in the Olympic Village, BT will bring fibre broadband with speeds of up to 40Mbps to all 550 athletes and officials staying at the Olympic Sailing Venue on the Isle of Portland.

BT ambassador and Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius said: "At the Games next year I won't have to worry about how I'm going to arrange to get broadband, I'll be able to focus on what I'm there to do - to win gold."

The company's fibre broadband service also went live in 27 exchange areas across London towards the end of last month.
