BT rolls out fibre broadband in Brixham and St Marychurch

Thursday, May 2nd 2013 by Paul France
Two more Torbay communities now have access to super-fast broadband.

Fibre optic broadband has been rolled out to thousands more properties in Torbay, with St Marychurch and Brixham the latest communities to be upgraded.

Under its £2.5 billion national super-fast broadband programme, BT has brought the technology to almost 9,000 homes and businesses in St Marychurch and more than 5,000 in Brixham.

The service will be available to over 19,000 premises in the two towns once the telecoms giant completes work on the rollout in the coming weeks.

BT has previously carried out similar projects in several other Devon communities, including Paignton, Newton Abbot, Dartmouth, Plymouth, Exeter, Teignmouth and Ivybridge.

Furthermore, a number of other locations - such as Dawlish and Totnes - are due to be upgraded later this year.

News of the deployment has been welcomed by Gordon Oliver, the mayor of Torbay, who described it as one of the most important improvements for local homes and businesses to take place in recent times.

"Increasingly, high-speed communications are an essential part of everyday life, whether you are working in an office, improving your education at home or just wanting to download a film," he added.
