BT rolls out fibre broadband to St Michael's Mount

Historic St Michael's Mount is the latest location in Cornwall to gain access to super-fast broadband.

BT has rolled out fibre optic broadband to St Michael's Mount, one of the UK's most iconic historic locations.

The telecoms giant has extended its super-fast broadband footprint to eight in ten families living on the tidal island, which is located 366m off the south coast of Cornwall.

This deployment comes as part of the Superfast Cornwall project, which is aiming to extend fibre broadband coverage to at least 80 per cent of properties in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014.

One of the first St Michael's Mount residents to sign up for the service is Bob Hunt, the island's head guide, who has seen his broadband speeds increase at least sevenfold.

"It's a great way of staying in touch with people all over the world using the very latest technology and, as a keen historian, I use the internet a great deal for research," he commented.

The news comes just days after fibre broadband became available to the first properties in Bodmin, making it the 29th Cornish exchange to be upgraded.
