The technology enables services such as online learning and flexible working.

Rolling out fibre optic broadband is about more than just offering people fast internet connectivity, according to BT.

In a progress report on its next-generation access project in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, the telecoms giant said the technology also provides a "giant fillip" to the economy, creating new jobs and helping businesses.

The service can also boost the quality of life for residents living in areas that are included in deployment programmes, the company said.

Enhancing online learning, access to information and services, and flexible working are also advantages offered by fibre broadband, BT commented.

It added: "The programme is also being used as a test-bed at the frontiers of innovation, trying out new technologies and solutions and offering advice to those looking to create similar initiatives elsewhere."

BT's Superfast Cornwall project, which is set to take place over more than three years, will see the technology delivered to all of the 250,000 properties in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
