BT says WAG responsible for Conwy fibre broadband

The introduction of fibre broadband in Conwy is up to the Welsh government, according to BT.

BT has said the decision to introduce fibre optic broadband connectivity to the north Wales town of Conwy and the surrounding area lies with the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG).

In December, the telecoms giant announced a further 175,000 homes and businesses across Wales would be connected to super-fast broadband throughout 2012, with 16 new exchange areas included in the rollout programme.

However, Conwy missed out on this series of upgrades and has also been excluded from BT's latest deployment of next-generation copper broadband, even though nearby towns such as Prestatyn are set to benefit.

Speaking to the North Wales Pioneer, a BT spokesman said they were unaware of any current plans for faster broadband to be rolled out in Conwy and insisted the WAG will need to be responsible for delivering fibre broadband in the area.

Commenting on the news, Janet Finch-Saunders AM said: "I am disappointed that Conwy has not been included in the investment plans for faster broadband."
