The telecoms giant is upgrading the exchanges in 17 parts of the capital.

BT is set to extend its fibre optic broadband coverage to almost 300,000 more properties in London over the coming weeks.

As many as 290,000 homes and businesses in 17 exchange areas will gain access to the telecoms giant's next-generation network, with the first premises already having been connected.

Among the locations that are poised to receive fibre broadband services for the first time are Crouch End, Kentish Town, Ruislip and Wanstead.

Once the work is finished, around 1.4 million properties in the capital will be hooked up to BT's fibre-based internet service.

Duncan Ingram, regional director for BT in London, said: "The arrival of super-fast broadband in these additional areas is a huge boost for local homes and businesses. It will transform their experience of the internet."

Earlier this month, the organisation announced it has recruited more than 90 apprentices to its engineering workforce to help out with its infrastructure improvement plans in London.
