BT's Champions League deal could bring fibre broadband boost

BT's deal to screen Champions League football could lead to an upsurge in its fibre optic broadband sales.

BT is hoping the landmark deal that will see it gain the exclusive live rights to Champions League football coverage from 2015 could lead to an upsurge in its fibre optic broadband customer base.

Bosses at the company have suggested the football packages could be combined with fibre broadband bundles in an effort to boost sales.

According to the Telegraph, the service provider will try to maximise revenues from its broadband customers to offset the £900 million that must be invested in the sports coverage.

BT Consumer Head John Petter alluded to the versatility of the company's product portfolio, claiming that the opportunity customers have to 'mix and match' different services would ultimately bring value to the market.

He said: "We think it'll give us the opportunity to up-sell to fibre by selling bundles of BT services."

This comes amid concerns that sports fans will lose out financially with no terrestrial broadcaster. Currently, consumers that subscribe to BT broadband can access the company's sports coverage for free, but the company has admitted viewers will have to pay an extra subscription for Champions League games.
