Bute looks for fibre optic solution

The Scottish island of Bute is considering ways it can install fibre optic broadband for its residents.

Residents on the Scottish island of Bute are considering their options as they seek to improve their broadband speeds with a fibre optic connection.

The Bute Rural Community Broadband Group (BRCBG) has been working with Campbell Cameron, an Internet Advisor for a number of islands for Community Broadband Scotland, to come up with a solution that could give citizens superfast download rates.

Anne Bissell, from BRCBG, told the local Buteman newspaper: "Initially we concentrated our efforts on the area around Kingarth and Kilchattan Bay. Encouraged, however, by Community Broadband Scotland the group has widened its remit to extend to all rural areas of Bute."

A technical appraisal on the viability of extending a fibre optic connection to rural areas of the island is expected in early June.

When this is received, a full consultation process will begin and this will give residents the chance to have their say on the project.
