Heather Joyce of Cardiff Council has praised an £11 million investment in fibre optic broadband.

Cardiff Council leader Heather Joyce has hailed a multimillion-pound investment in the city's fibre optic broadband infrastructure.

New Culture Secretary Maria Miller announced on Thursday (September 20th 2012) that the Welsh capital will receive £11 million to help provide ultra-fast broadband with speeds of between 80 and 100Mbps, as well as high-speed wireless internet access.

The award comes as part of a £114 million national scheme to improve broadband connectivity in underserved urban communities.

According to WalesOnline, Ms Joyce described the funding as "excellent news" for Cardiff, allowing the city to make vital upgrades to its communications infrastructure.

The council has already begun its investment programme in school networking, the results of which are set to be visible in the next few months, she explained.

Ms Joyce added: "We are also determined to make sure that we use this funding to help us to allow the more disadvantaged in our communities to improve their opportunities in the digital economy."
