CityFibre to bring fibre broadband to York businesses

Wednesday, December 5th 2012 by Miles Northrop
Businesses in York will be able to access advanced fibre-based connectivity from early next year.

A partnership between CityFibre and City of York Council is set to bring fibre optic broadband services to residents and businesses in the area.

CityFibre has rolled out a 103km pure fibre optic network throughout the city, bringing ultra-fast speeds to more than 110 sites, including council offices, schools and data centres.

During the first quarter of 2013, the network will be opened up to multiple internet service providers, allowing them to deliver fibre optic broadband connectivity to local businesses.

In the long term, pure fibre-based broadband will also be extended to residential properties via a fibre-to-the-home network.

The network rollout is set to concentrate first on areas with the highest demand for advanced broadband access.

Mark Collins, director of regulation and public policy at CityFibre, commented: "Our longstanding partnership with the City of York Council represents the essence of CityFibre's vision for towns and cities throughout the UK."

He added that the network is being expanded to provide businesses with "the benefits that a pure fibre infrastructure can bring".
