Fibre broadband boost for Shropshire village

The village of Montford Bridge in Shropshire has been given a connectivity boost after being introduced to fibre optic broadband access.

It was upgraded as part of Super Switch-on Day (Wednesday December 18th 2014), which saw various locations across the UK receive superfast speeds, thanks to the government's Broadband Delivery UK programme.

Around 160 properties in Montford Bridge were joined by an estimated 200,000 homes and businesses nationwide to receive the new connection.

BDUK is currently switching on an estimated 10,000 properties every week and this is set to increase to 25,000 a week by the end of spring 2014.

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson hailed the rollout as an important step in ensuring local economies remain on an even keel.

He said: "The rollout of superfast broadband has the potential to transform rural areas, bridging the age-old gap between rural and urban."

Mr Paterson went on to say he looked forward to seeing how businesses would take advantage of the new opportunities the technology would present to them.
