Fibre broadband launches in Britain's most southerly community

Tuesday, December 18th 2012 by Nigel Adie
The Lizard is the latest area to benefit from the Superfast Cornwall fibre broadband rollout.

Fibre optic broadband is now available in Britain's most southerly community thanks to the Superfast Cornwall initiative.

BT, one of the partners in the project, has rolled out the service to around 700 homes and businesses on The Lizard peninsula, while the neighbouring villages of Cadgwith and Ruan Minor have also benefited from the deployment.

Superfast Cornwall, a £132 million collaboration between BT, Cornwall Council and the EU, is aiming to boost fast broadband coverage across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014.

Since the start of the scheme in 2011, fibre broadband has become available to over 45 per cent of Cornish properties, with more than 17,000 customers signing up for the service to date.

Among the first sites to connect when the technology went live in The Lizard was Britain's most southerly inn, the Top House.

Landlady Donna Glosby said: "It's going to be a huge benefit to be able to offer a stable and fast Wi-Fi connection for our customers as we see so many who come in because we offer it for free."
