Vitesse has announced total sales of its EPON TIAs have surpassed five million units.

Fibre optic broadband technology firm Vitesse has announced impressive shipment figures for its VSC7716 burst-mode transimpedance amplifier (TIA).

The device, which works with Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON) in various types of fibre-based broadband infrastructure, has so far shifted more than five million units.

Vitesse said the milestone highlights its market-leading position in sales of EPON TIAs, with Infonetics Research predicting around 5.7 million EPON optical line termination ports will be sold worldwide by the end of the year.

Dr David Li, chief technical officer of Hisense Broadband Technologies, said Vitesse's device offers a "high-performance solution" for the EPON market.

"The chip's high sensitivity, fast settling time and large dynamic range are features that are in high demand by the telcos," he added.

Last month, the Broadband Forum revealed fibre optic services enjoyed a greater share of all global connections during the second quarter of 2011.

Hybrid fibre and DSL solutions accounted for 15 per cent of all lines, the study showed.
