Fibre-optic broadband tipped to boost Hull economy

The economy of Hull and Humberside will benefit from development like new fibre-optic broadband, local business leaders have said.

East Yorkshire's economy is set for a major boost thanks to the swift roll-out of fibre-optic broadband in the city, business leaders at the Port of Hull believe.

KC recently announced it would double the speed of the roll-out of its Lightstream system and this has been welcomed by Humber port director John Fitzgerald, the Hull Daily Mail reports.

He said: "Connectivity and infrastructure covers a range of facilities and services, including our ports, our railway networks and, in this case, our digital infrastructure."

Such initiatives make Humberside "more attractive to businesses looking to develop here", he added.

KC is aiming to connect 60,000 premises to the new service in the next two years, with speeds of 100-250 mbps.

Managing Director of the firm Gary Young said feedback on Lightstream has been "extremely positive".

The news is the latest positive development for Hull, following an announcement earlier this month that it is being added to the government's SuperConnected Cities programme.
