Fibrestream issues update on Cumbria fibre broadband project

Several elements of the NextGenUs community broadband scheme in Cumbria have been completed.

Fibre optic broadband provider Fibrestream has given a progress report on the NextGenUs rollout in Cumbria.

Guy Jarvis, managing director of the telecoms firm, said the first mile access network has already been deployed and is now active, while the dark fibre link through Lancashire and Cumbria is also finished and "ready to light up at gigabit speeds".

The separate elements of its FiWi scheme, which combines wireless and fibre optic broadband infrastructure, will soon be able to deliver symmetrical speeds of 10Mbps and above, he revealed.

Mr Jarvis pointed out the results have been achieved without requiring a penny of taxpayers' money and the network runs on a not-for-profit basis.

"Nor does the NextGenUs approach make any requirement for folks to buy shares, simply commitment to pay for service once successfully installed," he added.

The Cumbrian communities of Great Salkeld, Blencarn, Milburn, Murton, Ousby, Melmerby, Sleagill, Cliburn and Kings Meaburn have already been included in the NextGenUs super-fast broadband deployment.
