Keighley residents continue fibre broadband campaign

Campaigners in Keighley are hoping the area will be able to connect to fibre broadband soon.

Fibre Valley, a campaign group based in the Worth Valley, is continuing its bid to bring superfast fibre optic broadband to local areas, including Keighley, Haworth and Stanbury.

Members of the organisation have met with others in the community who are passionate about the cause, as well as with Keighley MP Kris Hopkins, Keighley News reports.

Representatives from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, BT Openreach and the Superfast West Yorkshire regional rollout programme also attended the event to discuss the possibility of bringing the high-speed broadband service to the community.

The latter is investing almost £24 million in improving internet speeds in the county, but whether or not Keighley will be included in the rollout remains uncertain.

Mr Hopkins acknowledged that there are still a few obstacles to overcome before superfast fibre broadband can come to the area, meaning many residents and businesses will be left with an inadequate internet service for some time yet.

Fibre Valley campaigner Ken Eastwood commented: "It was a very useful meeting and I'm grateful to [Mr Hopkins] for getting everyone together. We know that if we leave it to market forces, Stanbury is unlikely to get superfast broadband."
