Lincs council chief highlights broadband woes

Many properties in Lincolnshire have limited or no access to broadband services.

BT's plans to roll out fibre optic broadband to 31,000 more properties in Lincolnshire will not fully tackle the area's internet access woes, a council chief has insisted.

The telecoms giant announced residents are set to get access to the technology at some point during 2012, taking the number of premises in the East Midlands with a super-fast broadband connection to more than 700,000.

Richard Hardesty from Lincolnshire County Council's Onlincolnshire project acknowledged the development is "excellent news" for local householders and businesses in the area, reports the Lincolnite.

But he warned: "This will still leave many locations throughout the county with little or no broadband access.

"The county council is continuing to encourage commercial suppliers to invest in next-generation broadband services."

According to BT, internet users with a fibre optic broadband connection enjoy a number of advantages over those with slower lines, such as the ability to download an entire feature-length high-definition movie in around ten minutes.
