The service offers users speeds of up to 40Mbps.

Plusnet has announced the commercial launch of its new fibre optic broadband service.

From today (April 19th 2011), residents in enabled areas of the UK can sign up for the product and take advantage of download speeds of up to 40Mbps.

According to recent trials conducted by the internet service provider (ISP), the technology offers a substantial boost to subscribers' speed capabilities.

Some 74 per cent of customers taking part in the pilot scheme who previously received a maximum capacity of between 2Mbps and 12Mbps received speeds of at least 30Mbps when they connected to fibre broadband.

Furthermore, trialists were found to use an average of 40 per cent more data once they had access to the high-speed service, leading Plusnet to recommend signing up for a higher monthly allowance.

The ISP has also unveiled a new "Pro" add-on for its Value and Extra packages, offering users the chance to have all their traffic delivered at the maximum capability allowed by their connection.
