The internet service provider is going head to head with BT and Virgin Media.

Plusnet has announced the launch of its new fibre optic broadband packages, which will go head to head with products from Virgin Media and its parent company BT.

The Yorkshire-based internet service provider is utilising the BT network to offer download speeds of up to 40Mbps.

Jamie Ford, Plusnet chief executive, claimed the company's trials of fast broadband have been warmly received by the vast majority of people taking part.

"Plusnet Fibre is the next generation of broadband and 96 per cent of our trialists say they would recommend the service," he said.

"This will really benefit households where there are several users."

In January 2011, Plusnet revealed more than 600 customers were signed up to take part in the test of its fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology, with more than 100 orders in progress or waiting for connection.

At the time, the outfit reported average broadband usage among its FTTC subscribers increased by approximately 40 per cent.
