A local internet service provider claims it is supplying a rural village in Cumbria with the UK's fastest broadband connection.

An internet service provider has claimed it supplies a village in Cumbria with the fastest fibre optic broadband connection in the UK.

LonsdaleNET, which is a superfast broadband provider based in the region, specialises in delivering high connection speeds to remote areas.

It said the service it provides to the village of Melkinthorpe operates at a speed of 1,000Mbps - more than eight times the national average, according to the latest figures from Ofcom.

The high speeds are achieved through LonsdaleNET's fibre to the premises technology. Melkinthorpe is connected via a fibre optic cable that runs from a major broadband hub in Manchester. The service's performance is constantly monitored by the provider's staff.

Melkinthorpe residents have been delighted with the quality of service provided - with one man telling In-Cumbria he now has a connection 2,000 times faster than his previous service.
Penrith and Borders MP Rory Stewart also expressed his happiness that a local business has been able to achieve such high standards.

He said: "I was delighted to see the amazing LonsdaleNET project in Melkinthorpe.

"This is a local Cumbrian company proving it can achieve astonishing broadband speeds in a Cumbrian village."
