Fibre broadband will be coming to more Worcestershire communities before the end of the year.

The Superfast Worcestershire fibre optic broadband rollout project celebrated its first birthday this week (5 August 2014), announcing the next communities set to be connected to the high-speed technology to coincide with the occasion.

Internet loading speeds of up to 80Mbps will be coming to Upton Upon Severn, Bishampton, Inkberrow, Hanbury, Astwood Bank, Romsley and Wychbold during the programme's next phase, providing a greater number of homes and businesses with the numerous benefits the superfast service brings.

To date, over 1,400 residential and commercial properties throughout the county have been covered by the rollout, with this figure set to increase significantly to 10,000 by the end of the year.

BT Openreach engineers have currently upgraded 14 green roadside cabinets to the fibre network, with another 46 set to be connected to it in the near future. In addition, 60 km of new internet cables have been laid in the county.

Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey commented: "I'd like to wish the project a very happy birthday and thank it for its contribution to the nationwide transformation of broadband currently underway."
