Ultrafast services for rural communities near Bath

Rural communities surrounding Bath are to benefit from new ultrafast online services.

A new transatlantic cable is being laid between Canada and the UK that will help to bring much-improved online services to communities in the vicinity of Bath.

The Bath Chronicle reports a deal has been struck between local telecoms business TrueSpeed Communications and North American global network provider firm Hibernia Networks.

It will see a new subsea cable being run from Nova Scotia in Canada, under the Atlantic Ocean, all the way to Brean on the Somerset coast.

Evan Wienburg, company leader at TrueSpeed, told the publication: "The partnership represents a significant investment for internet connectivity in our region. It proves that national and international infrastructure can be shared for the benefit of local communities."

The project has now also received the backing of North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees Mogg, who stated that the news is "marvellous" and will provide a much-needed boost to connectivity in an area that is as yet unable to reap the benefits of next-generation online services.
