The service enables users to download a high-definition movie in seven minutes.

Virgin Media has unveiled plans to bring its 100Mbps fibre optic broadband service to Swansea.

When the improvement work takes place, Swansea will be the first town in west Wales to be hooked up to the cable company's up to 100Mbps broadband infrastructure, reports the South Wales Evening Post.

Consumers who sign up for the 'ultra-fast' service will be able to download an entire high-definition movie in seven minutes.

Explaining its plans to roll out faster broadband, Virgin said the levels of internet data consumed on its network have increased by 215 per cent in the past three years.

Jon James, the company's executive director of broadband, commented: "We know residents in Swansea will be blown away by what 100Mb can deliver and the very real impact this can have on day-to-day life."

Pre-registration for the service was launched in October 2010, with Virgin revealing at the time that it plans to extend the technology to more than 12.7 million homes.
