Half of UK homes can now access Virgin Media's 100Mbps fibre broadband service.

Virgin Media has confirmed the completion of its ultra-fast 100Mbps fibre optic broadband rollout across the UK.

The service is now available to all 13 million homes on the cable company's network, meaning around half of residences in Britain are now theoretically able to access some of the fastest broadband speeds in Europe.

According to Virgin Media, the move will enable consumers to take advantage of the next generation of digital entertainment services and "propel the country up the broadband speed charts".

The telecoms firm noted that the completion comes ahead of the "summer of sport", meaning the company is in a strong position to cope with the predicted surge in usage of connected devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Chief operating officer at Virgin Media Andrew Barron said the service provider has "catalysed a massive growth in the consumption of digital entertainment".

Last month, the company began doubling the broadband speeds available to its customers, with the initial rollout set to cover 1.5 million homes.
