Virgin Media exec says bandwidth motivates fibre broadband rollout

Increasing bandwidth usage is driving the rollout of fibre broadband services.

Virgin Media's director of technical strategy Kevin Baughan has said growing demand for bandwidth is a motivating factor in the cable company's fibre optic broadband rollout programme.

The average Virgin Media subscriber now downloads more than 25GB of data from their fibre broadband connection every month, representing growth of 43 per cent since 2007.

Speaking to IPTV News, Mr Baughan revealed this surge in usage helps Virgin Media to decide where its super-fast broadband services should be deployed.

"As demand for bandwidth continues to grow, both inside and outside the home, we want to put the power of our fibre optic network wherever people need it," he explained.

Mr Baughan went on to state the company is currently looking into ways that it can deliver a next-generation wireless broadband service to homes and businesses across the country.

This will help customers to keep advancing their "digital lifestyles", he claimed.

Virgin Media is also planning to extend its up to 100Mbps fibre broadband service to more than half of all homes by mid-2012.
