More than eight million homes can now receive 100Mbps broadband from Virgin Media.

Virgin Media has stated it is on track to deliver up to 100Mbps fibre optic broadband speeds across its entire network of around 13 million homes over the coming months.

The service, described by the cable company as the fastest widely available broadband in the UK, is set to be delivered to every property covered by the Virgin Media network by mid-2012.

More than eight million households are already able to sign up for the product, the internet service provider announced in its financial results statement for the third quarter of 2011.

This announcement means the 100Mbps service has been rolled out to approximately 1.5 million additional homes since July, when it was available to over 6.5 million properties.

During the three-month period, Virgin Media attracted 178,300 new fibre broadband customers, with more than half of them choosing speeds of 30Mbps or higher.

"Our results show that we're successfully serving what is a rapidly emerging market for better quality services," commented chief executive Neil Berkett.
