Wales receives new fibre optic broadband boost

Thursday, November 14th 2013 by Paul France
Superfast broadband has been introduced to 38,000 more Welsh homes and businesses.

Fibre optic broadband has come to 17 more locations in Wales thanks to the Superfast Cymru rollout project.

Towns and villages including Blaenau Ffestiniog, Criccieth, Fairbourne and Harlech will gain access to superfast speeds as a result of the scheme, which is a collaboration between service provider BT and the Welsh government.

Superfast Cymru differs from many projects in England as it has vowed to bring a next-generation connection to the "the length and breadth" of Wales, rather than simply serving a majority that risks excluding rural areas.

BT's Superfast Cymru Programme Director Ed Hunt told the North Wales Daily Post: "Thousands of people across the country are already enjoying the benefits of fibre broadband and we have already laid hundreds of kilometres of fibre cable as part of the project."

The latest phase of the project has introduced a fibre optic connection to 38,000 more homes and businesses, and a host of other areas are set to benefit in the coming weeks and months.
