Windermere and Bowness to get fibre broadband

Friday, April 4th 2014 by Editorial
Fibre broadband will be coming to Windermere and Bowness.

Connecting Cumbria, a regional superfast fibre optic broadband rollout programme, has announced the names of the first Lake District areas to gain access to the high-speed service.

Windermere and Bowness will become the first parts of the Lake District National Park to be able to connect to faster broadband in the coming weeks, with Connecting Cumbria delivering this news nine months ahead of schedule.

Currently, around 2,000 residential and commercial properties in the area can connect to fibre broadband, a figure that is expected to rise to almost 4,000 when engineering work to upgrade roadside cabinets to be able to receive the service has been completed.

It is thought fibre broadband will help boost the area's economy by attracting even more tourists to the location, as well as enabling local people to access faster download and upload speeds.

Today (Friday April 4th) MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tim Farron will be meeting with representatives from BT, Cumbria County Council and the Lake District National Park Authority to welcome the arrival of fibre broadband to the area.
