Be and O2 set to enter fibre optic broadband market

The Telefonica-owned providers are set to launch fibre broadband services this year.

Sister companies O2 and Be Broadband have announced plans to start offering fibre optic services in the coming months.

The two telecoms firms, which are owned by Spain-based Telefonica, are both keen to deliver their first fibre broadband packages before the end of the year.

Few specifics of the launch have been confirmed, but both O2 and Be have said they are planning to open up a pre-registration programme closer to the time.

Commenting on the news, managing director of home and broadband at O2 Felix Geyr stated the company has created award-winning internet packages in the past few years and is eager to maintain this high standard with its new products.

Chris Stening, managing director of Be, admitted its fibre broadband proposition is unlikely to be the cheapest available, but insisted the company is committed to offering the best service on the market.

"Our plans for fibre have to be something unlimited and unshaped too, otherwise it simply defeats the object of having greater speed," he remarked.
