BT and Fujitsu to do battle over Suffolk fibre broadband?

Two top tech firms are thought to be in the running to deliver Suffolk's super-fast broadband project.

BT and Fujitsu look set to fight it out over a contract to roll out fibre optic broadband across Suffolk.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, BT is keen to expand its existing broadband infrastructure in the county, while Fujitsu would look to collaborate closely with Virgin Media on the project.

Annette Thorpe from BT said the telecoms giant was not prepared to divulge specific details about its plans for commercial reasons, but said the company will look at a "mix of solutions" to suit the needs of different parts of the county.

Virgin Media already has thousands of customers in Ipswich and Felixstowe, but stressed that it is not looking to increase its footprint in the county to any great extent.

"Having already invested £13 billion of private money to build our network across half the country, we have to carefully consider where we can expand further within our own means," a spokesman explained.

The county council's Better Broadband for Suffolk strategy aims to bring speeds of 100Mbps to every home and business in the area by 2020.
