Around 2.2 million properties in London will have access to super-fast broadband in the near future.

BT's fibre optic broadband service will be available to around 2.2 million London properties in the coming weeks, the telecoms giant has announced.

Upgrade work is currently being carried out in several communities, including Southall, Twickenham and Upton Park, with the project set to bring the technology to as many as 165,000 more homes and businesses once it is finished.

This is just the latest upgrade to BT's broadband infrastructure in the capital, as the company has also revealed another 350,000 premises will gain access to super-fast internet services later this year.

Andrew Campling, general manager for BT in London, said: "The local authorities ... are keen to get fibre broadband to as many local homes and businesses as possible, and so we will offer our help and assistance to make that happen."

In early December, the company announced it had extended its super-fast broadband service to 10,000 commercial and residential properties in Shoreditch, including the Tech City digital and creative hub.
