BT fibre broadband goes live in Shoreditch

The first properties in Shoreditch can now sign up for BT's super-fast broadband service.

BT fibre optic broadband is now available in the Shoreditch exchange area, which is one of the leading digital, creative and hi-tech business hubs in London.

When engineers complete the local infrastructure upgrade in the coming weeks, more than 10,000 households and businesses in the area will gain access to the super-fast broadband service.

This development means around 1.9 million London properties have either already been connected or will be in the near future, while another 650,000 premises in the city will be hooked up to fibre broadband by BT by the end of 2012.

Andrew Campling, general manager for BT in London, said: "Fast and reliable internet connections are an essential part of our national infrastructure, whether we want them for entertainment at home ... or delivering essential public services."

The news comes in the same week the telecoms giant announced its fibre optic broadband service has gone live in nine more Cornish communities.
