CityFibre to roll out fibre broadband to York homes and businesses

Private properties are set to be passed by the CityFibre network in York.

CityFibre has announced it will roll out fibre optic broadband to residents and businesses in York as part of its partnership with the city council.

The fibre optic infrastructure provider installed a 103km "ring" of cables around York last year, connecting 110 public sites, such as council buildings, NHS facilities and schools, meaning the city already has a digital "backbone" in place.

Under City of York Council's strategy, 95 per cent of businesses will be able to access 25Mbps connectivity by the end of 2014, but the completion of CityFibre's network will involve the widespread deployment of services that far exceed this target.

Greg Mesch, chief executive at CityFibre, said: "Our collaboration with City of York Council is leading the way as a solution that allows all public, private and residential sectors to be connected across a pure fibre optic infrastructure."

Earlier this month, the telecoms firm secured a financing facility with Citigroup to support the rollout of its fibre optic networks in several UK towns and cities.
