Fibre optic broadband goes live in Irvine

Wednesday, September 18th 2013 by Paul France
Some 2,500 premises in the North Ayrshire town of Irvine have been connected to fibre broadband as part of a rollout by BT.

The North Ayrshire town of Irvine has seen 2,500 homes and businesses gain access to fibre optic broadband as part of a £2.5 billion project by BT.

As engineering works continue over the coming weeks, the number of premises with next-generation access is expected to reach 8,500.

The introduction of high-speed connections in Irvine follows similar moves in the nearby towns of Ardrossan-Saltcoats and Stanecastle.

If BT continues to meet its targets, it is hoped fibre optic broadband will be available in 44,800 North Ayrshire properties by the end of spring 2014.

Central Ayrshire MP Brian Donohoe praised the project, claiming Irvine will enjoy a host of benefits as a result of greater connectivity.

He said: "Better, faster communications boost businesses, helping them grow and create more jobs. What's more, local residents can enjoy faster browsing and downloading at home."

Mr Donohoe went on to discuss his anticipation of the prospect of fibre broadband access becoming available throughout his constituency.
