Binfield Heath residents invested £60,000 in bringing superfast broadband to their village.

Residents in Binfield Heath, a South Oxfordshire village, have been enjoying the benefits of superfast fibre optic broadband after they raised £60,000 to bring the high-speed technology to their community.

Villagers raised £60,000 to go towards BT Openreach's commercial broadband rollout programme, which introduced superfast internet to the area in December.

The work cost less than was originally thought, meaning there is £10,000 left over in the broadband fund for residents to spend on other local projects, the Henley Standard reports.

Binfield Heath Broadband Action Group explained in a letter to those who donated: "Funds created by oversubscription must be retained by the parish council and used to fund other projects of benefit to the parish."

Since the arrival of fast fibre broadband in Binfield Heath, residents have been enjoying the chance to work from home and benefit from much higher download and upload speeds than was originally anticipated.

Richard Ormerod, a member of the Broadband Action Group, said the investment had been worth it, as it has "made this little village part of the 21st century".
