More than 7,500 properties in Ormskirk will be connected to fibre broadband over the coming weeks.

BT has rolled out high-speed fibre optic broadband to the first homes and businesses in Ormskirk, West Lancashire.

Over the coming weeks, the telecoms giant will deploy super-fast broadband to more than 7,500 homes and businesses in the town, taking the number of properties across the county with access to the technology to more than 200,000.

In addition, over 91,000 local premises have been earmarked for future upgrades.

Mike Blackburn, BT's regional director for the north-west, said: "The advent of fibre broadband in Ormskirk is a massive fillip for businesses and households in the area."

This is the latest major investment in Lancashire's communications infrastructure announced by BT in recent months.

In April, the company revealed it will utilise government funding - provided throught the county council and Broadband Delivery UK - to deploy fibre broadband to 97 per cent of properties in the area by the end of 2014.

The project will take BT's total investment in fibre optic broadband in Lancashire to around £130 million.
