The chairman of CBI Scotland has welcomed BT's plan to increase its fibre broadband speeds.

BT's plan to double the speed of its fibre optic broadband proposition has been hailed by CBI Scotland chairman Nosheena Mobarik.

The telecoms giant will boost the maximum download capability of its super-fast broadband service from 40Mbps to 80Mbps next year, with the work set to benefit more than 200,000 homes and businesses across Scotland.

Commenting on the development, Ms Mobarik said high-speed internet access is now a "must" for companies of all sizes and across a variety of sectors.

It enables firms to reach different markets and get involved in several types of ecommerce, she claimed.

The CBI Scotland chief added: "It is important that government and the private sector continue to do all they can to ensure that as many companies as possible can reap the benefits of this game-changing technology."

BT's fibre optic broadband customer base has more than doubled over the past six months and now stands at more than 300,000 people.
