The service will soon be available to 48,000 people across Edinburgh.

BT has announced the first homes and businesses in Edinburgh's Fountainbridge area can now connect to its fibre optic broadband service.

As a result of the rollout, more than 48,000 properties in the Scottish capital are either already hooked up to the super-fast internet product or will be in the near future.

Another 30,000 premises in the city have been included in BT's fibre broadband rollout programme, with the work set to take place either before the end of the year or during 2012.

BT Scotland director Brendan Dick said the telecoms giant's investment will boost the local economy and Edinburgh's ability to compete with other cities.

"The arrival of super-fast broadband in Fountainbridge is a huge boost for local residents and businesses. It will transform their experience of the internet," he added.

In July, the company revealed almost 150,000 more Scottish homes and businesses will be connected to fast up to 20Mbps copper broadband by next spring.
