BT recruits more ex-servicemen for fibre broadband rollout

Monday, October 22nd 2012 by Nigel Adie
Up to 250 former armed forces personnel are set to be recruited as BT engineers.

BT is supporting its national fibre optic broadband rollout programme by recruiting as many as 250 more engineers, made up of personnel who are set to leave the armed forces.

The new employees will play their part in the telecoms giant's next-generation broadband deployment by installing the technology in homes and businesses across the country.

BT started the second of four ten-day training programmes today (October 22nd 2012), with additional courses due to run until early November.

As a result, the first group of newly trained engineers should be ready to begin assisting new BT fibre optic broadband customers from the end of this month.

Liv Garfield, chief executive of Openreach, BT's local access network business, said: "We have had great success in recruiting talented people with armed forces experience in the past so we are delighted to be able to offer these roles to people who are set to leave the forces."

Openreach has previously recruited more than 800 personnel from the army, navy and air force, with this latest drive set to take that number to more than 1,000.
