Over 32,000 properties in Gloucester will be upgraded to receive super-fast broadband in the coming weeks.

BT has announced the rollout of fibre optic broadband to tens of thousands of homes and businesses in Gloucester.

With some parts of Gloucestershire - including Cheltenham and Stroud - already able to access the telecoms giant's super-fast broadband service, more than 32,000 properties in Gloucester are set to be upgraded over the coming weeks.

The development takes the number of premises across the county served by BT's fibre broadband to over 140,000, reports the Citizen. By next spring, a further 45,000 will be connected to the service.

This is the latest BT upgrade to benefit the county, coming shortly after the firm rolled out faster copper broadband to 15,000 properties in Bishops Cleeve, Falfield, Lechlade, Painswick and South Cerney.

Gloucester City Council leader Paul James praised the company's decision to invest in the local communications infrastructure.

"Fast broadband is an essential tool for local businesses and will be a catalyst for the creation of new jobs," he commented.
