More than 26,500 Aberdeen properties will receive fibre broadband access from BT in the coming weeks.

Aberdeen has become the latest part of Scotland to benefit from BT's fibre optic broadband rollout programme.

The telecoms giant is in the process of delivering super-fast broadband to more than 25,000 homes and businesses in the city, with the work set to be finished in the coming weeks.

BT's fibre-to-the-cabinet proposition offers downstream rates of up to 80Mbps and headline upload speeds of 20Mbps, which the internet service provider (ISP) claims is the fastest in the UK.

Director of BT Scotland Brendan Dick said the arrival of fibre broadband in Aberdeen will offer a significant boost to local consumers and businesses.

"Internet users with a super-fast connection can do much more online, all at the same time," he commented.

"Benefits include wider use of high-quality videoconferencing and faster back-up of computer systems."

More than seven million properties across the UK can currently access BT's fibre optic broadband service, with the ISP planning to increase its footprint to ten million premises by the end of this year.
