Consumers in Mid Calder can now sign up for BT's fibre broadband service.

The first homes and businesses in Mid Calder can now take advantage of BT's fibre optic broadband service, the telecoms giant has announced.

Up to 3,500 properties in the West Lothian town are set to benefit from the rollout, which is due to be completed in the coming weeks as part of BT's project to deliver super-fast broadband to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2014.

In meeting this goal, the company will utilise a combination of fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and fibre-to-the-home technologies, both of which offer significant boosts to the speeds currently available to most homes across the country.

According to the latest Ofcom figures, the average UK home broadband speed stood at 7.6Mbps in November 2011. In comparison, BT is set to roughly double the maximum speed of its FTTC service to 80Mbps from April.

Director for BT Scotland Brendan Dick said: "The arrival of super-fast broadband in Mid Calder is a huge boost for local households and businesses."
