The advantages of super-fast broadband access are being highlighted to businesses in Plymouth.

BT will today (May 22nd 2012) demonstrate the business advantages of fibre optic broadband to companies in Plymouth.

The telecoms giant is taking a specially-adapted vehicle to the Tamar Science Park and Langage Business Park, with staff set to explain how the technology can help firms make efficiency savings.

Next-generation broadband is currently available to more than 50,000 homes and businesses in the city centre, Crownhill and Plympton, while upgrades are due to be carried out in St Budeaux and Devonport later this year.

Anthony Payne, director for place at Plymouth City Council, said: "Super-fast connections are becoming increasingly important for business. [The technology] enables companies to work more efficiently and effectively."

Earlier this year, BT revealed that it now operates 330,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across south-west England, including more than 70,000 access points in Devon.

Of these, almost 8,000 can be found in Plymouth and nearly 5,000 are located in Exeter.
