BT to roll out fibre-to-the-home broadband in Innerleithen

Fibre-to-the-home broadband is set to be available in Innerleithen in the coming months.

Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders has been selected as the latest community to get access to BT's fastest fibre optic broadband service.

The telecoms giant is set to roll out its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) proposition in the town, making it the first place in Scotland to benefit from its ultra-fast broadband speeds, reports BBC News.

Residents and businesses should be able to sign up for the service, which currently offers download rates of up to 100Mbps, by March 2012. BT will also deploy its up to 40Mbps fibre-to-the-cabinet infrastructure in the town.

BT Scotland's partnerships director James McClafferty said: "At a time when organisations around the UK are seeking investment partners to bring super-fast technologies to their areas ... Innerleithen has shot straight to the forefront of Digital Britain."

Launching its FTTH service earlier this month, BT stated the product comes with the same download speeds as Virgin Media's top-tier package, but offers upload rates that are 50 per cent faster.
